Jiu Jitsu

Like its offspring Judo, Jiujitsu employs throwing techniques, but it also includes the striking, punching and kicking of Karate and boxing, grabbing and locking joints. Jiu Jitsu also employs dislocating, strangling, choking, dirty tactics of reality fighting. One must remember that in real situations there are no rules, Jiu Jitsu is an extremly effective form of self defence that has been tried and tested by ancient Sanmurai, police and prison officers around the world.


Judo

Cobberkwai is one of Christchurch oldest and most successful Judo clubs, conveniently located just 10 minutes walk from the city centre on the corner of Fitzgerald Ave and Chester Street East.

What is Judo? It is an Olympic and Commonwealth games sport which originated from the Japanese martial art and it also develops self-defence skills.

Who can do Judo? Persons from 5 to 80 male and female have found something in this sport.

How do I join the Judo Club? It couldn't be easier to join the club. All you need to do it turn up! Come along to one of our sessions and you can have a go there and then. There's no waiting list.

Wrestling

Olympic freestyle wrestling is a body contact sport, which providing it is taught correctly, can prove to be a very worthwhile form of recreation. Particpation will develop initiative, co-ordination, strength, flexibilty, self confidence and alertness. Although success depends on individual performance, most aspects of training involve group acitvity.

People from, 7 years to middle age, are welcome to join and work at their own pace to develop and improve their ability.

Hapkido

Hapkido is a Korean martial art that teaches you to defend yourself and others against a variety of attacks. It combines blocks and strikes with joint locks, pressure points, holds, takedowns and throws, combining the techniques of a variety of martial arts.
